Yes, they were. But I have observed the effects such as lack concentration, the inability to think through a project and see the big picture. I have also seen what happens to my own children if I allow them to play video games for any length of time. My oldest can walk away. My youngest would play non stop for days if I let him. It was pretty scarey to see him so "unplugged" by being "plugged in".
I thought it was fascinating. Some of the data points were shocking.
